Electrical Engineering Intern - Verge Aero
Verge Aero is building exciting drone light show technology to quickly deploy spectacular custom performances. These mesmerizing and powerful experiences are truly a sight to behold with innovative engineering technology. The company’s goal of taking drone light shows to the next level is an exciting focus on leveraging automation in a fully integrated hardware and software platform for the entertainment industry.
To fix multiple GPS failures seen at shows, I implemented tests in Python and C to document and record failures. Initially it was unclear where the error occurred requiring me to user an oscilloscope and network analyzer to observe multiple signals for control systems in the drone and to check for interference with wireless signals from the base station. After extensive troubleshooting vibration from the motors and the propellers seemed to affect the GPS. This required washers to be replaced which were not properly added during assembly by the manufacturer so this test was added to the steps to verify a drone’s functionality before being sent out for light shows. Another impact I had on drone light shows was designing a standardized flight test safety routine in Python and C that procedurally launched drones in groups one meter above the ground to hover for one minute before landing back in the launchpad. This test also recorded data to determine if the drone’s behavior was unfit for safe flying and identify the sensors that required recalibration.
I obtained a Remote Pilot’s License from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and successfully ran 7 shows independently in Ocean City, Maryland for 50,000 people and even assisted with an onsite FAA safety inspection of the system. This responsibility involved properly understanding and explaining the company waivers, policies, and procedures for safe flight operations while also maintaining proper communication with the partner production company.
The combination of fireworks and drones allows for stunning displays that are amazing engineering feats. The most visually stunning example was a 4th of July show in Blue Ash, Ohio alongside a major fireworks production company. It was a wonderful experience to travel to Cleveland, Cincinnati, Ft. Benning, and Ocean City. A favorite performance was 350 drones along with the Jonas Brothers, Marshmello, and the United States Olympic Gymnastics Team that was featured on NBC on July 4th, 2021 as part of the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular as shown in the following video.
The opportunity to travel and work with Verge Aero on show operations repairing drones, setting up the base station, and interfacing with clients was a rewarding experience. This holistic engineering experience improved my ability to communicate technical information related to the Verge Aero system as well as how to account for logistical challenges associated with implementing engineering solutions.
